Typha latifolia resilience to high metal stress: Antioxidant response in plants from mine and flotation tailing ponds

Typha latifolia (cattail) forms natural stands in the transition zone of artificial flotation and mine tailings ponds is contaminated with extremely high concentrations metals. We assessed absorption capacity plant, metal transfer to leaves, effects elevatedmetal on antioxidant enzyme activities. Soil acidity, pseudo-total available content substrate, plants were examined. The elevated activities (superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol glutathione reductase) assessed. Cattails exhibited accumulation levels roots a low rate leaves. found depend type enzyme, plant their molar ratios, as well pH substrate. High enzymes indicate increased generation reactive oxygen species (ROS) show that detoxification mechanisms are insufficient restrain toxicity. Pronounced resistance efficiency phytostabilization cattail could be valuable component biological treatment systems for removing metals from multi-metal heavily substrates range ultra-acidic neutral.
